High Purity Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger Design

Design standards are crucial for pharmaceutical applications. Engineers actively participate in ASME-BPE committee meetings to ensure that the heat exchangers adhere to the latest hygienic design and fabrication practices. Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and strict tolerances are maintained to minimize contamination risks and provide peace of mind.

Standard Pharmaceutical Design Features

Roller Expanded, Seamless Tubes: Pharmaceutical heat exchangers feature 316L seamless tubes polished to 25Ra or better. Tubes are roller expanded into double-grooved tube sheets and sealed with welds, enhancing stability and preventing contamination. Surface Finish: The exterior of heat exchangers and insulation jackets is polished to 40Ra as a standard, providing a sanitary appearance and improved cleanability. In-house electropolishing capabilities ensure top-quality surface finish, controlling cost, quality, and lead time.

Pitched for Cleanability: Heat exchangers are designed with pitched surfaces to facilitate gravity draining on both sides. Weep slots in the pass partitions aid in fluid drainage, and return pockets and weep slots are fully radiused and polished for enhanced cleanability. Due to surface tension in highly polished tubes, additional air or heat may be needed for complete drainage.

Roller Expanded, Seamless Tubes

Our pharmaceutical exchangers are manufactured with seamless tubes crafted from grade 316L stainless steel. The tubes are precision polished to create a smooth surface finish of 25Ra or better, giving them superior resistance to corrosion and contamination. During fabrication, the tubes are skillfully roller expanded into double-grooved tube sheets, then permanently sealed to prevent contamination.

Surface Finish

We specialize in providing our clients with the highest quality surface finish on their exchangers and insulation jackets. We implement a 40Ra polishing standard for all of our products, which not only gives them an attractive and hygienic look and feel, but also increases their cleanability. Plus, we give you the best surface finish available with state-of-the-art electropolishing.

Pitched for Cleanability

Our pharmaceutical exchangers are designed to promote effective gravity draining of both the interior and exterior surfaces. Unique return pockets and weep slots have been incorporated into the pass partitions to ensure that fluid can be completely drained away. To further enhance cleanability and drainage, all weep slots and return pockets have a radiused profile which are fully polished to encourage draining.

Additional Features Available

Double Tube Sheet: This feature prevents cross-contamination between shell and tube fluids. The gap between tube sheets minimizes stress and allows for leak detection.

Passivation: In-house passivation ensures the equipment is clean, degreased, and has enhanced corrosion resistance.

Insulation Jacket: For insulation needs, options include a Thermalux moisture barrier with non-asbestos, chloride-free Inswool ceramic insulation material. Polished pipe jackets are fully welded and finished to a 40Ra standard. Nozzle covers can be stainless sheet tack welded or PipeTite boots.
